Q1 2021 Impact Report

The beginning of 2021 has been filled with hardships and hope. Chile is facing the worst of a second wave of COVID-19 infections. The majority of the country, including Valparaíso, is once again under a strict quarantine and has been since the beginning of March. This new shutdown prevents schools from reopening and adds on to the staggering 18 months that our students have not stepped foot in a classroom.

VSP has been working hard for our students, families, and communities. Your support has made it possible for us to address the difficult challenges they face and adapt as an organization to the rapidly changing reality of the pandemic. During the first quarter of 2021, VSP has:

  • Supported over 1000 community members through deliveries of food and sanitary supplies to community kitchens. Ensuring that our communities' basic needs are being met is of utmost importance as the pandemic continues.

  • Enrolled 125 students to participate in VSP programming focused on academics, mental health, and physical well-being in 2021.

  • Connected with 2 new schools to bring VSP programming to even more children in need.

  • Hired 2 new programming coordinators and our first graduate participating in a VSP work-study program (more information to come).

  • Completed over 32 hours of home visits with students and their families. Home visits help our team connect with parents and guardians, better assess the needs of our students, and receive feedback to ensure our work is having the greatest impact.

  • Renewed commitments with all of our local partners, including neighborhood organizations, local health officials, schools, and the Chilean Navy.

Thank you so much for your support and belief in VSP. We look forward to keeping you updated throughout the year!
