The beginning of March marks a new school year for VSP students. We had many new faces at programming activities and in the VSP office. We welcomed students from a new community, Porvenir. Porvenir is located in a part of Valparaíso called Playa Ancha. Although it is only a 10 minute drive from our office, it is one of our most vulnerable student populations. Families from Porvenir not only deal with high levels of crime and violence, but also have little access to public transportation to connect them to the rest of the city. We are honored and excited to welcome students from Porvenir to the VSP family!
Additionally, our staff has been growing. This quarter our staff included two programming coordinators with backgrounds in social work and education, and a full-time surf coordinator. Eight VSP graduates are working part-time for the organization as mentors, photographers, and more. We are also excited to have re-started our international internship program. All of these dedicated and talented people have made it possible to host programming four days a week and make sure we are there for our kids day-in and day-out.
