We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to our Board of Directors at Valpo Surf Project (VSP), Max Handler. Max brings a wealth of experience as an entrepreneur, technology leader, and operations expert. His impressive background, from scaling companies like WeWork to founding his own ventures, positions him as a dynamic force for growth and innovation at VSP.
Max’s journey into leadership began at WeWork, where he helped propel the company from a startup into a global phenomenon. His operational expertise enabled WeWork to scale from three locations to 800, while growing the team from 60 employees to 15,000 across 40 countries—all within just eight years. He later transitioned into leadership roles at tech companies PackageX and VisionX, where he leveraged cutting-edge technologies to revolutionize business operations. Most recently, Max has applied his talents at &vest, where he leads operational strategy and digital solutions. We are excited to have Max on board to help steer the future of VSP.
A Personal Connection to VSP’s Impact
Max first encountered VSP in 2020 during a visit to Valparaíso (see video above, created by Max's brother Shane!). While helping our team refine our strategy and operations, Max witnessed the social unrest that engulfed the streets at the time. Despite the challenges, he saw firsthand the profound impact VSP was having on local youth and the community.
“I left inspired by the organization,” Max reflects. “I thought the best way to support their work was by joining the Board of Directors and helping guide them. Not to mention, the VSP team is awesome and a ton of fun!”
Max’s passion for creating sustainable, impactful change aligns perfectly with VSP’s mission. He is committed to helping us grow thoughtfully, ensuring we can extend our reach to more children without losing the unique elements that make VSP so powerful.
Vision for Growth and Overcoming Challenges
When asked about his vision for VSP’s future, Max emphasized his focus on ensuring the organization’s growth is economically sustainable. “I’d like to see VSP grow in a way that allows us to positively impact more children across Valparaíso and beyond,” he says.
Max acknowledges that scaling any organization comes with challenges. His experience in scaling companies provides him with the insights needed to navigate these complexities. “Our biggest challenges will be around adding more neighborhoods, communities, and children to our program while maintaining what makes it so special and impactful. But the opportunities are huge—there are a ton of kids who can benefit from VSP’s programming.”
The Strengths That Set VSP Apart
Max believes VSP’s unique value lies in its clear and visible impact. “It’s an organization with a unique value proposition that you can see firsthand when you’re there. The team is extremely dedicated, the community of supporters is growing, and our relationships with local schools are strong.” Max is excited to help nurture these strengths while finding new ways to expand VSP’s positive impact on the community.
Life Beyond Work and VSP
Outside of his professional accomplishments and commitment to VSP, Max is an avid fan of action sports, especially those involving a board. Snowboarding tops his list of favorite activities, and though he hasn’t taken up surfing yet, he feels a natural connection to it through his love for the outdoors and adrenaline-driven sports. When he’s not riding the slopes, Max enjoys traveling with his wife and spending time with close family.
With Max’s leadership and dedication to creating meaningful impact, we’re excited for the bright future ahead at VSP. Join us in giving a warm welcome to Max Handler as the newest member of the Valpo Surf Project Board of Directors!
